Dax Shepard took to Twitter on Thursday to celebrate a successful twelve years of sobriety, recognizing his family as another element of his accomplishments. He tweeted:

“12 years ago today I came out of my last toxic, life threatening stupor. I now have a wife & babies & some self-esteem #gratitude #promises.”

A few years ago Dax opened up to Playboy and got specific about what his addictions had involved.

“I just loved to get f—ed-up—drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, everything. Mostly my love was Jack Daniel’s and cocaine. I lived for going down the rabbit hole of meeting weird people. Of course, come Monday I would be tallying up all the different situations, and each one was progressively more dangerous. I got lucky in that I didn’t go to jail.”

Dax has also shared in the past that part of his issues stemmed from the fact that he was sexually assaulted by a male neighbor when he was only seven years old. Luckily he recovered. His wife Kristen Bell has even said that his experiences have taught him to know the value of things in life.

“He’s a wonderful father. He knows the value of things. He was an addict for many, many years, and he pulled himself out of it, and he’s been sober for 11, 12 years now. … And he knows how many times he’s messed up and how many times he’s been really close to losing everything.”
