Jessica Lange has confirmed that she will not be returning to Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story.

The actress spoke to Charlie Rose about the decision.

“No, I had four years with that, four seasons, and each year was a marvelous character. Everything changed from one year to another which made it very interesting to me. But no, I think sometimes you come to the end of something and it has had its natural…” She trailed off before saying “end.”

Jessica did not appear in American Horror Story: Hotel after appearing in the earlier seasons, leaving many to wonder if she would be returning ever again. Last year she said that “this was a great collaboration [with Murphy], so I would love to keep working with him.” Perhaps the two will work on a different project at a different time.

Meanwhile Jessica is starring on Feud, a different show on the same channel as AHS, FX. American Horror Story will continue on without her, beginning its sixth season later this year. It has not been released what the name or theme will be this time around.

Here is as much as Ryan himself has mentioned about it:

“The interesting thing about this season is we’ve been working on two ideas at once, which we’ve never done,” he said. “So I don’t want to say what it maybe is…. Both things that we’re writing right now – we haven’t declared a winner – will have a different form, so we’re excited about that. We’ll talk about it soon, but we haven’t landed on it yet. If you look at horror tropes, the innocence of children, that sort of wide-eyed entryway into some world is always very dramatic and satisfying.”
