Jessica Szohr has spoken out in defense of her ex and former Gossip Girl costar Ed Westwick in the midst of the rape allegations that have been brought against him. So far, two different women have accused Westwick of rape and one other of assault.

Westwick has been denying the claims entirely since they first started coming out. He says that he has been cooperating with the police to prove that he is innocent. Szohr has now spoken out in his defense, acknowledging that it’s a bit difficult to do so considering that she wasn’t there. Westwick and Szohr dated for two years between 2008 and 2010, and Szohr said that she found the claims shocking. She was asked to elaborate on her thoughts about the matter for Cosmopolitan magazine.

“I don’t even really know how to answer it, if I should, because I don’t want anything to get twisted, because I have known Ed for years and know how lovely he is, and don’t think he would ever put someone in a position like that. It’s difficult, because you don’t want someone you know to go through that or do that to someone, or knowing them well, knowing that you don’t think they would, and you don’t want, for the girls that are coming forward, it’s like, are they stretching the truth?”

None of the women accusing Westwick of assault filed police reports at the time, although one woman did after she shared her version of the rape story on social media. Since the allegations have come to light, Westwick’s TV projects have been put on hold. A three part drama called Ordeal By Innocence is one that had a scheduled Christmas release but has been put on hold.

The BBC has released a statement saying that they understood it was important to do so in the interim while everything is worked out, but that they were not making a statement about Westwick’s guilt by doing so.
