In case you’re not up on the trend, vaping is the name given to using an electronic personal vaporizer, which contains a (usually) tobacco-free E-Liquid and is puffed on like a cigarette substitute. The liquid is generally made with propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin plus flavors, and the odorless vapor is considered far less harmful or offensive than cigarette smoke (although it’s not without controversy). These e-cigarettes and vaporizer devices can help people quit smoking without losing the pleasurable habit of inhaling something – something a nicotine patch can’t say. It has become a popular choice among celebrities who are trying to quit smoking or who just enjoy the pleasure of it. While old Hollywood might have helped cigarette smoking become popular back before we all knew how bad it was, today’s Hollywood types are promoting this healthier alternative as the new cool accessory.

1. Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan has probably been snapped smoking cigarettes more than any other young actress out there, but in 2011 she was spotted with an e-cigarette in hand. The photo actually got it’s own segment on Extra. Apparently Lindsay got her e-cig starter kit from her concerned pops. While some detractors say that these substitutes haven’t been studied or regulated enough, it’s no doubt a better alternative to puffing away on a nicotine stick, so it’s a step in the right direction for LiLo.

Some fans were fuming at these images, while others thought why shouldn’t he be open about the mainstream habit? One actress, however, has critiqued Leo’s vaping habit for a different reason. Miley Cyrus told Jimmy Kimmel: “I was feeling this emotion because there’s, like, a kind of etiquette-cy of when you’re there, you’ve got to pass that s—t, Leo. And he never did. So that was weird to me. He wasn’t passing the vape.”

5. Miley Cyrus

As mentioned above, Miley called out Leonardo DiCaprio for not passing along his vape pen to her at the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special. Her implication was that there was marijuana in the pen, so Jimmy Kimmel mentioned that perhaps it was just tobacco. Miley seemed to disagree saying: “He was looking at me like this [squints eyes] as I was performing, so he was like ‘I really like it.” Miley has not been shy about smoking all sorts of things, even lighting up a joint on stage on occasion.
