A lot of hard work goes into make-out scenes in a film or TV show, even if the finished product looks romantically authentic. After all, we just see the final product, not the struggles, the out-takes, the on-set drama, the bad breath or the genuine dislike that can sometimes take place between the lip-locking cast. For some onscreen couples, it’s a pleasurable day on set when the script calls for a passionate kissing scene. However, if the actors are not that into each other for one reason or another, it can be an icky day on the job. Here are 15 actors who dreaded kissing their costars and haven’t been shy when it comes to talking about it.

1. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson

Jennifer Lawrence is not totally in the clear however, since her costar Josh Hutcherson from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire actually critiqued her skills, saying she was a “slobbery” kisser. So there.

2. Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller

Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller had some kissing scenes in The Spectacular Now but apparently Miles wasn’t too amped about it. Miles said that before those scenes, Shailene would take supplements supporting her “granola” lifestyle that “smelled like crap.” Yup, that can be a turn off.

3. Kirsten Dunst and Brad Pitt

Let’s not forget that Kirsten Dunst was once an adorable child actor put in the position to kiss a much older Brad Pitt in Interview With a Vampire. Kirsten admitted that her and Brad’s kiss was her first ever, on or off screen, and that she found it “disgusting.” Sorry Brad, can’t win them all.

4. Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried

It wasn’t that the girls cast in Jennifer’s Body didn’t like each other, it was more that Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried felt like their scripted kissing scene was a little silly and gratuitous. That being said, Amanda has admitted that she thinks their girl-on-girl lip-locking scene is pretty sexy to watch.

5. Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson

When Water for Elephants was shooting, it happened to line up with Robert Pattinson having a bad cold. Reese Witherspoon said that her kissing scenes with the star were “unpleasant” because of it. Who knew?

6. Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire

The upside down kiss between Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man was one of the most memorable things about the movie but it sounds less thrilling to shoot than it is to watch. Tobey has been quoted saying: “Probably the hardest thing I’ve had to do as Spider-Man was kiss Kirsten Dunst. When we shot that scene where we kissed in the alleyway and I was hanging upside down, it was really late at night, it was raining, and the whole time I have rainwater running up my nose. Then, when Kirsten rolled back the wet mask, she cut off the air completely.” I guess you could say she took his breath away.

7. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan

Any actor who signed on to star in 50 Shades of Grey should have known that there was going to be a significant amount of kissing involved, but apparently Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan weren’t too thrilled about their chosen partner. Supposedly they just didn’t have any chemistry, which added to the already awkward nature of their kinky sex scenes. They soldiered on, however, like all pros do.

8. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper have starred together in films multiple times, so you’d think they’ve got this chemistry thing down pat. But in shooting Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer told Bradley that he was a “wet kisser.” One of the smooches in that movie did end up winning Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards however. Chalk it up to good acting.

9. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

The end result of The Notebook is so romantic that no one would ever assume that stars Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling really didn’t get along in real life. It is even more curious when you know that the two ended up dating after the film wrapped. And yet everyone admits that when shooting began, the two were at odds. Supposedly there was some screaming and yelling. Ryan didn’t want to work with Rachel at all, and he even tried to get her kicked off the film. They must be great actors, however, as that passionate kiss in the rain was one of the hottest ever to hit the big screen.

10. Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth

Has Jennifer Lawrence had any good onscreen kissing experiences? Jennifer and Liam Hemsworth had to pucker up in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, and J. Law would reportedly eat foods like tuna or garlic and skip the teeth brushing. She did it on purpose as a prank, however, since the two actors are good friends. Nonetheless, Liam has called the experience “gross.” Not really what any girl wants to hear.

11. Tom Cruise and Thandie Newton

For Mission Impossible 2, Tom Cruise and Thandie Newton had to lock lips, but Thandie said the experience was “slightly icky and sort of wet.” It also took them quite a while to get the shot and the external temperature was reportedly uncomfortably hot.

12. Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel

When the TV show How I Met Your Mother first started shooting, Jason Segel was a smoker…and Alyson Hannigan was not too keen on kissing his smoker’s mouth. But this story sort of has a happy ending since Alyson’s strong feelings about the subject actually convinced Jason to quit smoking once and for all. Kissing can be a good motivation.

13. Kate Hudson and Dane Cook

Kate Hudson and Dane Cook starred together in My Best Friend’s Girl, and Dane actually said that Kate was his worst on screen kiss…thanks to her eating habits. He said: “I think she purposely ate a feast of onions right before the scene. I had to burn her on that one.”

14. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint

In Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Emma Watson and Rupert Grint had to pucker up and Emma admitted that it was the “weirdest” of her onscreen kisses. The two friends grew up together and are more like brother and sister. She said: “Dan and I could sort of have a laugh about it. Whereas Rupert’s a bit more quiet so I didn’t really know what he was thinking…”

15. Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco

For Spring Breakers, Vanessa Hudgens had to kiss James Franco, much to her chagrin. Vanessa was quoted as saying: “Eeeew! I don’t want to kiss James! I’d rather kiss a girl than James Franco,” and deemed it her worst onscreen kiss ever. She had no such qualms however, of making out with costar Ashley Benson.
