Deciding on the greatest movie quotes of all time is difficult because there have been so many influential lines recited over the years. First, we looked at the line’s significance in the film, and then its meaning. Finally we evaluated its impact on our societal culture and what type of legacy it’s left. The American Film Institute revealed it’s top 100 picks over the last 100 years in 2005. We decided to update it with our own list, with quotes from both classics newer films. 10. Harrison Ford in Stars Wars (1977)
“May the force be with you.” This famous line has become a cult symbol for the Star Wars legacy. It is said by Han Solo (Ford) to Luke, right before the attack on the Death Star battle station. The line has now been recited by at least one character in all of the Star Wars films.
9. Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects (1995)
“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.” Spacey was playing con man, Roger “Verbal” Kint, in the Oscar winning film, when he spoke these famous words.
8. Robin Williams in Dead Poet’s Society (1989)
“You hear it? – Carpe – hear it? Carpe. Carpe Diem. Seize the day boys; make your lives extraordinary.” Williams played English teacher, John Keating, who taught the young men at a conservative boarding school to follow their hearts.
7. Brad Pitt in Fight Club (1999)
“It’s only after you’ve lost everything that you’re free to do anything.” Pitt played Tyler Durden, a who started underground fight clubs to channel primal male aggression. Throughout the film, Durden discovered much more about himself than how to just release his anger. Fight Club became a cult classic.
6. Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump (1994)
“Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Hanks played Forrest Gump, a simple minded man who lives by the advice of his mother. Gump is trying to prove that love has no boundaries in his quest to win over his childhood friend, Jenny.
5. Robert DeNiro in Taxi Driver (1976)
“You talkin’ to me?” DeNiro plays Travis Bickle, an ex- Marine turned lonely NYC taxi driver in this classic film directed by Martin Scorsese. The film has been considered one of the greatest of all time.
4. Judy Garland in The Wiaazrd of Oz (1939)
“There’s no place like home.” Garland played, Dorothy Gale in the classic film. Gale, who’s swept away in a tornado to a magical land, must find the wizard to be able to return home to Kansas.
3. Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca (1942)
“Here’s looking at you, kid.” Rick Blaine (Bogart) says this to Ingrid Bergman as they speak for the last time and decide that their relationship will never work. The line is now used frequently in toasts.
2. Marlon Brando in The Godfather (1972)
“I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.” Brando portrayed powerful mafia boss, Vito Corleone in the legendary film. The line was said when Corleone’s godson, singer Johnny Fontane, came to him and begged for his help to get a role in a film. The line is not meant to sound as benevolent as it does- the “offer” being “do as I say or I’ll kill you.” The studio head eventually gives Fontane the part after he discovers the severed head of his expensive racehorse in his bed.
1. Clark Gable in Gone with the Wind (1939)
“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” This line is known as one of the greatest movie quotes of all time because it genuinely captures Rhett Butler’s (Gable) feelings towards Scarlett O’Hara (Leigh) after she asks “Where am I going to go? What am I going to do?” After 10 years of their tumultuous relationship, Butler has finally given up.
