People pay big bucks to watch stars perform live, so obviously they feel cheated if the singer is caught lip syncing. It’s even worse when the culprit lip syncs to other vocalists’ recordings while performing their covers. Here are 9 celebrities who gave their throats a rest when they were expected to use them to their fullest extent.

1. Shakira Lip-synced During the World Cup

Shakira’s best memories of the 2010 FIFA World Cup would probably be those with Gerard Pique. But the most glaring memories of her fans would be her lip syncing during the opening ceremony. It was so obvious because the song began early, and she didn’t even try to move her mouth to the words.

2. Lindsay Lohan

Lohan ‘tried’ to lip sync during a live performance on Good Morning America, but the attempt fell apart when her mouth did not even move when the music began. You would think that she’d put in a little extra effort given that her album had just been released, but apparently she didn’t care – a rep later admitted that the star had used background music i.e. lip synced to her own songs.

3. Beyonce Lip-synced the National Anthem with the US Marine Band!

Not many stars have the opportunity to perform the National Anthem with the US Marine Band, but Beyonce let the chance go when she couldn’t find time to practice with the band. She later admitted to lip syncing the anthem. It was definitely disappointing because Beyonce has an amazing voice.

4. Mariah Carey’s Vocal Fail at the BET Awards

Carey did the unthinkable at the BET Awards in 2013 when she lip synced to her latest track, “Beautiful.” As you’d have guessed by now, the mouth and the music left each other midway. Her fans were naturally very disappointed. Interestingly, Carey appeared not to care at all!

Our most outrageously dressed star had her lip sync moment in 2008 when she silently mouthed the words for the Australian show, Sunrise. Gaga later claimed that her dancing forced her to lip sync. She assured fans that this was the first and last time.

While performing “Roar” at the Cannes Awards, Perry put down her microphone but the background music (with her vocals) kept playing. Apparently, the music had not been properly synced with her performance, so we can’t blame her entirely for this fiasco. Nevertheless, we do wish she would have just sang the song herself.

Spears gave one of her worst performances at the 2007 VMAs, with everything that could go wrong went wrong. How else can we explain her pathetic dance steps or her totally out of sync lip syncing. We would sympathize with a star who’s having a bad day, but for Spears we think that the criticism she got was well deserved.

8. Ashlee Simpson- Worst Lip Sync of All Time

Ashlee Simpson faced one of the most notorious lip-syncing disasters of all time. In 2004, while performing on Saturday Night Live, her band made the mistake of playing “Pieces of Me” instead of “Autobiography,” for which the singer had begun to sing. The result was a plethora of horrible dance moves prior to an ungraceful exit.

9. Chris Brown Disappoints Fans…Again

Chris did his share of lip syncing at the 2012 Billboard Awards, perhaps because of the extreme level of dancing he did. If he expected sympathy, he got none, with Pink expressing her hope (sarcastically of course) that if she ever chose to lip sync, she would hopefully do a better act that him.
